Men’s volleyball team opens MCVL schedule with losses to Mount Union and Baldwin Wallace
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men’s volleyball team opened its Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) schedule with two losses. The Comets began the day with a three-set defeat to University of Mount Union. Olivet then made the 60-mile trip northwest and fell to Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University in three sets.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's volleyball team opened its Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) schedule with two losses. The Comets began the day with a three-set defeat to University of Mount Union. Olivet then made the 60-mile trip northwest and fell to Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University in three sets.
Final Score: Mount Union def. Olivet 25-17, 25-12, 25-21
Location: The McPherson Academic and Athletic Center; Alliance, Ohio
Records: Olivet 4-8 overall, 0-1 MCVL; Mount Union 2-7 overall, 1-0 MCVL
- The only time the Purple Raiders trailed in the first set was 1-0. In the second set, the teams exchanged the first eight points. With Olivet holding a 5-4 lead, Mount Union went on a 7-1 run and never looked back.
- After a 2-2 tie in the third set, the Purple Raiders scored five straight points. Mount Union pushed its lead to as many as seven points on three occasions. Following the final time at 20-13, the Comets went on a 7-2 run to close the gap to five points, 22-20. A kill followed by a service error made the score 23-31. The Purple Raiders ended the set and match with back-to-back kills.
- Sophomore Deontay Thomas led Olivet with nine kills.
- Freshmen Nicholas Gonzales and Ethan Valente were next with five kills apiece.
- Sophomore Everett Haynes recorded 24 set assists.
- Junior Dakota Galeazzi topped the defense with nine digs.
- Cameron Ternent posted a match-best 13 kills.
- Sam Matonis finished with six kills and .750 attack percentage.
- Jeremy Leyden and Will Henney tallied 23 and 18 set assists, respectively.
- Steve Grenier collected 14 digs.
Final Score: Baldwin Wallace def. Olivet 25-16, 25-17, 26-24

- Valente had six kills.
- Haynes collected 15 set assists.
- Galeazzi, Hartman and Haynes each registered five digs.
- Michael Beard led the Yellow Jackets with 12 kills and recorded a .579 attack percentage.
- Nick Irelan had nine kills and .538 hitting percentage.
- Brandon Long notched 37 set assists.
- Michael Devlin finished with nine digs.
- Olivet returns to the court next Friday and Saturday, February 25-26, with two matches in Wisconsin. On Friday, the Comets play Lakeland College at 4 p.m., and on Saturday, they face St. Norbert College at 2 p.m.
