CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Olivet College sophomore Deontay Thomas has been selected the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) Offensive Player of the Week.
Thomas averaged 4.75 kills per set in the Comets' first four matches of the 2022 season. In Olivet's home-opener against Calumet College-St. Joseph (Ind.), he had a team-leading nine kills. Thomas followed that performance with double digit kills in each of the Comets' matches at the Adrian College Quad. He had 15 kills against both Marian (Wis.) University and Millkin (Ill.) University and wrapped-up the quad with 18 kills against the host Bulldogs. The 18 kills broke the Olivet single-match, three-set record. It also ties for the third-most, regardless of number of sets played.
In addition to his 57 total kills, Thomas posted a .224 attack percentage. He also had three assisted blocks and 14 digs.
"Deontay was absolutely unstoppable during our first weekend of play," said Olivet head men's volleyball coach Kenny Brokaw. "In our first four matches, he put up three of the best offensive performances in school history. I'm very happy for him receiving this recognition because he truly deserves it. He's overcome some adversity recently and I'm very proud of how he has bounced back without missing a step."
Thomas is only the second men's volleyball player in school history to be named a MCVL Player of the Week. The other was Will Menching who was chosen the MCVL Co-Defensive Player of the Week on March 18, 2021.
Thomas and the Comets (1-3) are back in action next Friday, February 4, when they host Concordia University Chicago. First serve from inside the Cutler Event Center is 7 p.m.
