Men’s volleyball team falls to Calumet-St. Joseph in season-opener

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's volleyball team began the 2022 season with a three-set loss to Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) tonight at the Cutler Event Center.

- Olivet led 2-0 in the first set. The Crimson Wave responded with a 5-0 run to go up 5-2. Calumet led by as many as 10 points, 24-14. The Comets saved five set points with a 5-0 spurt before an attack error handed the set to the Crimson Wave.
- Calumet led the second set from start-to-finish.
- In the third set, Olivet used a 4-0 run to turn an 8-7 deficit into an 11-8 lead. The Comets eventually pushed their advantage to four points, 21-17. A 5-0 spurt put the Crimson Wave ahead 22-21. Olivet evened the score at 22-22 before two Calumet points made the score 24-22. A Comet kill closed the gap to a point before a service error gave the set and match to Calumet.
- Olivet finished the match with 21 kills – five in the first set, 10 in the second set and six in the third set.
- Sophomore Deontay Thomas slammed down a team-leading nine kills.
- Sophomore Kai Hartman was next with five kills.
- Sophomore Everett Haynes dished out 16 set assists.
- Junior Dakota Galeazzi tallied a team-best nine digs.
- The Crimson Wave recorded 45 kills and posted a .341 attack percentage.
- Pedro Castillo led all players with 19 kills.
- Jacob Moen registered 41 set assists.
- Gianluca Righetto had 10 digs.
- Olivet rests tonight and is back in action tomorrow and Sunday at the Adrian College Quad. Tomorrow, the Comets play Marian (Wis.) University at 2:30 p.m., followed by a match against Millikin (Ill.) University. On Sunday, Olivet faces the host Bulldogs at 3 p.m.
