Men’s volleyball team swept by Mount Union in two MCVL matches
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men’s volleyball team was swept by University of Mount Union (Ohio) in two Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) matches this afternoon at the Cutler Event Center. The Purple Raiders won by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 in the first match, and 25-19, 25-18, 25-20, in the second match.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's volleyball team was swept by University of Mount Union (Ohio) in two Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) matches this afternoon at the Cutler Event Center. The Purple Raiders won by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 in the first match, and 25-19, 25-18, 25-20, in the second match.

- The teams traded the first eight points of the opening set, resulting in four tied scores. Following a 4-4 deadlock, the Purple Raiders scored the next two points. The Comets fought back and leveled the score at 8-8 and 9-9. Mount Union responded with three straight points before Olivet came back to tie the score at 15-15 and 16-16. A 3-0 Purple Raider run put them ahead for the rest of the set.
- In the second set, Mount Union led 8-5. The Comets answered with a 5-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. Olivet maintained the advantage until the Purple Raiders used a 4-0 spurt to turn a 12-10 deficit into a 14-12 lead. Two Comet points evened the score at 14-14. Mount Union then ended the set on an 11-3 run.
- The Purple Raiders had the early advantage in the third set. Trailing 5-1, Olivet went on a 12-3 run for a 13-8 lead. Mount Union responded with five consecutive points to tie the score. The teams exchanged points, which created five tied scores. After the last one at 18-18, Mount Union put seven of the final nine points on the scoreboard to win the set and secure the sweep.
- Freshman Kai Hartman and Deontay Thomas finished the match with nine kills apiece.
- Hartman posted a .438 attack percentage, as he had only two errors on 16 attempts.
- Freshman Everett Haynes dished out 24 set assists.
- Thomas recorded a team-best six digs.
- Cameron Ternent collected 10 kills, followed by Sam Matonis and Justin Sibbel each with nine.
- Jeremy Leyden tallied 31 set assists.
- Steven Grenier had eight digs.
- In the first set, Olivet built a 7-3 lead. Four straight Mount Union points made the score 7-7. From there, neither team led by more than two points until the Purple Raiders went ahead by three, 14-11. Mount Union did not relinquish its lead for the rest of the set.
- Early in the second set, the score was even five times. After the last time at 9-9, the Purple Raiders scored six of the next seven points for a 15-10 lead. The Comets were not able to recover from that deficit.
- The third set was similar to the opening set, as Mount Union led 7-3 before four consecutive Olivet points leveled the score. The Purple Raiders came back to go up 11-9. A 4-0 Comet run before a 3-0 Mount Union run made the 14-13. Following two deadlocks at 14-14 and 15-15, Olivet went ahead briefly, 16-15. The Purple Raiders closed on a 10-4 run to win the set and match.
- Olivet posted a slightly better hitting percentage, .176, compared to Mount Union, .169.
- Freshman Quinn Dickerson led the Comets with eight kills.
- Hartman and senior Dan Hayes each had seven kills.
- Hayes recorded a .375 attack percentage and tallied four blocks (two solo and two assisted).
- Haynes collected 25 set assists.
- Hartman, Haynes and sophomore Dakota Galeazzi finished with four digs apiece.
- Ternent topped all players with 13 kills.
- Sibbel was next with seven kills to go along with a team-best seven digs.
- Leyden had 27 set assists.
- Olivet heads to Cincinnati, Ohio, next weekend for two MCVL matches against Mount St. Joseph University. The first match is Saturday evening at 7 p.m., followed by the second match on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
