Swimming teams sit fifth at 2023 MIAA Championships
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming teams are fifth-place after the second day of the 2023 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships inside the Venema Aquatic Center. The Comet women have totaled 131 points and are 10 points ahead of sixth-place Alma College. The men have recorded 113 points and are six points ahead of sixth-place Alma.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming teams are fifth-place after the second day of the 2023 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships inside the Venema Aquatic Center. The Comet women have totaled 131 points and are 10 points ahead of sixth-place Alma College. The men have recorded 113 points and are six points ahead of sixth-place Alma.
- Junior Jennifer Mann posted Olivet's top finish, as she was second in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 5:04.15.
- Also, in the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Bridgette Shroll finished 10th (5:24.36).
- freshman Sarah Steffens placed 10th in the 200-yard individual medley with a personal-best time of 2:16.82. The time also ranks sixth all-time in school history.
- Both the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays were sixth. Swimming on 200-yard freestyle relay team were sophomore Mya Kinnunen, freshman Kelsee Lawson, freshman Makalia Dodd and senior Chelsea Perry, and their time was 1:51.43. The 400-yard medley relay consisted of Steffens, Shroll, Mann and Lawson, and they finished in 4:12.34.
- Swimming personal-best times in the morning preliminaries were:
- Lawson in the 500-yard freestyle (5:52.65)
- Senior Karley Wheeler in the 500-yard freestyle (6:42.76)
- Kinnunen in the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.29)
- Junior Erin Sanders in the 200-yard individual medley (2:51.55)
- Senior Takato Timmerman posted a 13th-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, stopping the clock at a season-best time of 21.82 seconds.
- Sophomore Treyton Gabrielson placed 15th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.91). During the prelims, he swam a personal-best time of 4:57.02.
- The 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays finished fifth. The 200-yard freestyle team of Timmerman, sophomore Landon Morgan, sophomore Seth Kading and senior Carter Moore clocked-in at 1:26.37. The 400-yard medley quartet of junior Dylan Lyons, Morgan, Moore and Gabrielson had a time of 3:37.85.
- Other personal-best times in the morning preliminaries were:
- Freshman Matthew Brown in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.30)
- Sophomore Declan Nowakowski in the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.85)
- Freshman Jack Pendell in the 50-yard freestyle (25.48).
- Day three of the MIAA Championship is tomorrow, with preliminaries and finals in the 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke. Prelims begin at 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 5 p.m.
