Men’s swimming and diving finishes in third-place at 2010 MIAA Championships
Led by junior Rafe Maxwell’s (Bay City/Western) gold medal finish in the 200 butterfly, the Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team finished in third-place at the 2010 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships.

Calvin College hosted the three-day championships at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids. The Comets scored 493 points to edge fourth-place Calvin by 65 points. Hope repeated as league champion with 878 points, followed by Kalamazoo (853).
Maxwell won the 200 butterfly in 1:54.80, which breaks his own school record by more than ½ second. He also denied Hope's Ryan Nelis a third straight league championship in the event. Also in the 200 butterfly, freshman Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview) was fifth (1:59.26) and sophomore Zach Burgess (Holt) was seventh (2:00.91).
Olivet had three swimmers finish in the top 16 of the 1,650 freestyle, led by junior Rick Kinsey's (Chelsea) eighth-place finish (16:56.78). Swimming in his final collegiate event, senior Sam Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) was 11th (17:18.94) and sophomore Mike Mette (Rockford) was 14th (18:22.21).
Junior Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington) brought home a sixth-place finish in the 200 backstroke. During this morning's preliminaries, he recorded a NCAA Championships provisional qualifying time of 1:53.19. Mette won the consolation finals of the 200 backstroke to finish in ninth-place (1:57.25), while freshman Nick Edgar (Lansing/Everett) finished 13th overall (2:03.37).
Junior Mike Harden (St. Johns) and freshman Brock Jackson (Sturgis) finished 5-6 in the 100 freestyle with times of :46.59 and :47.10 seconds, respectively. Sophomore Austin Munn (Pinckney) was second in the consolation finals to finish 10th overall with a time of 47.69 seconds.
Freshman Josh Mauk (Battle Creek/Lakeview) swam to an eighth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, clocking-in at 2:15.42. Also in the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Matt Marquette (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) was 12th (2:17.91) and freshman Payton Violassi (Bloomfield Hills/Andover) was right behind him in 13th (2:19.95).
Olivet's 200 freestyle relay team of Harden, Jackson, Beckwith and Munn finished in second-place. They stopped the clock in 3:06.90.
