Men's swimming and diving team beats Alma, 103-78
The Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team won eight-of-13 events to beat Alma College, 103-78, today at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet.
The Olivet College men's swimming and diving team won eight-of-13 events to beat Alma College, 103-78, today at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet.
The Comets won both relays and six individual events. Swimming in his final home meet, senior Sam Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) anchored the winning 200-yard freestyle relay. Joining him on the relay were juniors Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington), Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western) and Mike Harden (St. Johns). They clocked-in at 1:30.38.
The winning 400-yard medley team of consisted of Beckwith, sophomore Matt Marquette (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix), junior Zach Burgess (Holt) and freshman Brock Jackson (Sturgis). Their time was 3:44.55. On the first leg, Beckwith broke the pool record in the 100-yard backstroke at 52.68 seconds.
Maxwell was a double winner, touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle (1:51.89) and 100 butterfly (:53.77). The other winners were Beckwith, 100 freestyle (season-best :48.87); Harden, 50 freestyle (:22.10); junior Rick Kinsey (Chelsea), 1,650 freestyle (17:18.08); and freshman Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview), 400-yard individual medley (4:58.73).
Jaffee was second in the 1,650 freestyle, as he touched the wall in just under 18 minutes, 17:59.85.
During the meet, Beckwith and Maxwell swam time trials in the 200 backstroke and butterfly, respectively, in search of pool records. Both accomplished the feat. Beckwith clocked-in at 1:56.34 in the 200 backstroke, while Maxwell did the same in the 200 butterfly, 1:57.90.
Olivet will wrap-up the dual meet portion of its schedule next Saturday at Albion College.
