The Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team was edged by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Calvin College, 141-139, today at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids.

The Comets won seven individual events and both relays. Junior Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington) swept both backstroke events, winning the 100 in a season-best time of 53 seconds and 200 in 2:00.30. Junior Mike Harden (St. Johns) touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle, clocking-in with a season-best time of 21.96 seconds.
Freshman Brock Jackson (Sturgis) won the 200 freestyle (season-best 1:47.55). He was second in both the 50 (:22.13) and 100 (:48.91) seconds. Freshman Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview) finished first in the 100 butterfly (:53.04), while junior Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western) was second (:53.58). The 200 butterfly was the reverse, with Maxwell winning in a season-best time of 1:59.37, and Knight placing second (2:03.44). Junior Rick Kinsey (Chelsea) captured first-place in the 1,000 freestyle (10:15.25).
The 200 medley relay team of Beckwith, sophomore Matt Marquette (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix), Maxwell and Harden finished first in 1:38.41. The 400 free relay quartet of Harden, Kinsey, Beckwith and Jackson won in 3:13.73.
Olivet is back in action Saturday, Jan. 23, when it hosts Alma College at the Upton Center Pool at 1 p.m.
