The Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team opened the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association portion of its schedule with a 157-141 loss against Kalamazoo College today at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet.

The outcome of the meet was not decided until the conclusion of the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Hornets took first and third-place. If it was the other way around, the Comets taking first and third, they would have walked away as the winner.
The only double winner for Olivet was junior Steven Davis (Davidsville, Md./DeMatha), who won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle. His time in the 500 was 4:59.42, while he clocked-in at 10:14.78 in the 1,000.
The Comets swept the top three spots in both diving events. On the one-meter, junior Shawn Bergman (Chelsea) took first with a school-record total of 266.05 points, followed by junior Justin Hulsebos (Wayland), 245.10; and junior Andrew Wasson (Grand Ledge), 222.75. On the three-meter, Hulsebos was first, 244.60, followed by Bergman, 231.30; and Wasson, 228.55.
Senior Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central) swam to tie for first-place with Kalamazoo's Craig Fleming in the 100-yard freestyle. Both swimmers had a time of 49.43 seconds. Powers also touched the wall second in the 50-yard freestyle (:23.05).
Senior Yury Bylina (Minsk, Belarus/Minsk Sport) had three runner-up finishes. He was second in the 100-yard butterfly, :54.77; 200-yard butterfly, 2:05.66; and 200-yard individual medley, 2:02.00. Sophomore Nathan Busscher (Hamilton/Holland Christian) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, 1:48.25; and 500-yard freestyle, 5:04.71. Senior Ryan Key (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) was second in the 200-yard breaststroke, 2:16.19.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Busscher, Bylina, Powers and junior Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt) was second in 3:20.71.
Olivet is back in action Friday, Nov. 9, for an invitational at Eastern Michigan University. Calvin College, Denison (Ohio) University and Wayne State University are also competing. Action from the Jones Natatorium in Ypsilanti gets under way at 5:30 p.m. in Ypsilanti. Results between Calvin and Olivet will be pulled to get a MIAA dual result.
