Men’s and women’s swim teams sweep team titles at North Central Invitational
The Olivet College men’s and women’s swimming teams swept the team titles today at the North Central (Ill.) College Invitational, which was held at the Naperville Central High School. The men were first of six schools and tallied 558 points to beat Wheaton (Ill.) College by 144 points. The women were first of eight schools with 473.5 points, which was 92.5 points more than second-place Wheaton.

On the men's side, the Comets recorded first-place finishes in eight of 10 events and second in seven events. Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland) was a triple winner as he won two individual events and swam the second leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. Individually, he was first in the 100-yard backstroke (:56.34) and 100-yard butterfly (:53.83). Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico), Yury Bylina (Minsk, Belarus) and Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt) joined Fetters in the winning relay in 3:18.06.
Other first-place finishes included Bylina in the 200-yard individual medley, 1:59.69; Voss in the 50-yard freestyle, :22.66; Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) in the 500-yard freestyle, 5:03.17; and Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason) in the 100-yard breaststroke, :59.96.
The last first-place finish was by the 200-yard medley relay team of Voss, Brian Johnson (Lansing/Eastern), Ryan Key (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) and Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario) in 1:40.77. This relay team edged Olivet's other team of Bylina, Fetters, Meisner and Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central) by :03 seconds.
Nick Stone (Westland/John Glenn) recorded a pair of runner-up finishes – 200-yard freestyle (1:50.40) and 500-yard freestyle (5:05.74).Also finishing in second were Aguirre, 100-yard freestyle (:49.30); Johnson, 100-yard backstroke (:57.61); Key, 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.39); and Takahashi, 100-yard butterfly (:54.54).
On the women's side, Olivet had four first-place finishes, including three by Amy Johnson (Gaylord). Johnson captured the 50-yard freestyle (:25.79) and 100-yard freestyle (:54.70). She also joined with Laura Herzog (St. Joseph), Kalee Redder (Grandville/Jenison) and Jackie Taylor (Plainwell) for the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:48.58). Herzog touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.85).
In addition, the Comets had four runner-up finishes. Johnson, Redder, Taylor and Carrie Schroeder (Marshall) claimed second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.15). The remaining second-place finishes were by Taylor, 200-yard individual medley (2:23.00); Ashley Oliver (Ironwood), 100-yard backstroke (1:04.09); and Erin Tramper (Jenison), 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.08).
Olivet is now idle until Jan. 12-13 when it participates in the University of Chicago (Ill.) Invitational.
