Men’s swimming and diving team stands in second-place at 2006 MIAA Championships
After the first day of the 2006 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships, the Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team stands in second-place with 145 points. Hope College is first with 178 points. Calvin College is hosting the championships at Jenison High School.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico), Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland), Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central) and Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt) finished in second-place with a school record time of 1:25.65.
In the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) and freshman Steven Davis (Davidsonville, Md./DeMatha) each moved up one spot from their preliminary finish to place fourth and fifth, respectively. Jaffee's time was 4:44.31, while Davis clocked-in at 4:47.41. Freshman Igor Rasula (Belgrade/Serbia) was eighth at 4:50.71, and sophomore Jason Wheatley (Portage/Central) was 10th at 4:52.72.
Freshman Yury Bylina (Minsk, Belarus) placed fifth and lowered his school record by .21 seconds to 1:58.47 in the 200-yard individual medley. Also finishing in the top 12 of the 200 IM were freshman Ryan Key (Phoenix, Ariz./ Brophy Prep), eighth (1:58.98); sophomore Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario/ Silverthorn CI), ninth (1:59.92); and junior Ben Guins (Lansing/Eastern), 12th (2:02.95).
Powers and Voss competed in the consolation finals of the 50-yard freestyle. Powers touched the wall in a school record time of 21.58 seconds to place ninth, while Voss recorded a time of 22.16 seconds to place 12th.
Comet divers finished in fourth, fifth and sixth-place on the one-meter board. Freshman Justin Hulsebos (Wayland) was fourth with a school record score of 408.75 points, followed by freshman Shawn Bergman (Chelsea), 402.70; and junior Andy Weiss (Fremont), 376.35.
The 400-yard medley relay was the closest race of the night as Hope's relay beat Olivet's team of Fetters, Powers, Takahashi and Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason) by .39 seconds. The Comets' time was a school record at 3:29.47, which also qualified them provisionally for the 2006 NCAA Division III Championships.
Action resumes tomorrow and Saturday with prelims each morning at 10 a.m., and finals at 6 p.m.
