ALBION, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team overcame a late 2-1 deficit to stun Albion College, 3-2, in double overtime tonight in a non-conference contest this evening at the Davis Athletic Complex.
Final Scores: Olivet 3, Albion 2 (2OT)
Location: Davis Athletic Complex; Albion, Michigan
Records: Olivet 1-0-0 overall, Albion 0-1-1 overall
- The Britons took a 2-0 lead behind goals in the 13th and 34th minutes.
- The Comets trimmed their deficit in half exactly four minutes after Albion's second goal. After a Briton foul, freshman David James served the ball from 35 yards out into the six-yard box. Sophomore Dominik Burmeister headed the ball into the goal.
- The score remained 2-1 at halftime. Albion had a 7-3 advantage in total shots during the first 45 minutes of the game.
- Olivet had a great chance to score the equalizer early in the second half. Senior Joshua Rosendale's shot on a breakaway was turned away by the keeper and out of bounds for a corner kick.
- The Comets netted the tying goal with just 28 seconds left in the second half. Off a long throw by Rosendale near the Olivet bench, Burmeister used his head to tap the ball past the keeper.
- Both teams recorded a shot in the first overtime period.
- In the fifth minute of the second overtime, Rosendale placed his shot into the net off a pass from sophomore Noah Runnals.
- Olivet finished the game with nine shots.
- Rosendale led the way with five, including three on-goal.
- Junior Andrew Aragon was the winning goalkeeper, as he played all 105 minutes and made three saves.
- The Britons recorded 12 shots, placing five on-frame.
- Jason Warras topped the team with three shots, while Stefan Isaevski had two.
- Maximilian Loria was the losing goalie.
- "I am so happy for the guys," said Olivet head coach Doug Carter. "They showed a lot of character in tonight's win. We played so poorly in the first 30 minutes of the game. We were fortunate to get a goal late in the first half and it gave us something to build on for the second half. It speaks volumes with how we kept pressing late in the game and we were able to get a goal to send the game to overtime. In the first overtime period, we had a wonderful chance to score and just missed. And then in the second half, Noah had a great pass into the box, and an even better finish by Josh with the game-winning goal.
- "I would also thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to get us in the position to play a soccer game. They have all worked hard and I appreciate all of their efforts."
- Olivet starts Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Thursday at Alma College. The game will take place at Bahlke Field and get started at 4 p.m.
