ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College men's soccer team defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Trine (Ind.) University, 2-0, today at Weaver Field in Angola, Ind. With its win, Olivet gets back to the .500 mark with a 7-7 overall record and maintains fourth-place in the league standings with a 5-4 mark.
The Comets had a couple scoring opportunities in the first half but failed to put a shot into the goal to keep the score 0-0. Olivet dented the scoreboard for the first time in the 12th minute of the second half. Sophomore Gregory Petty slipped the ball into the 18-yard box to the feet of senior Zach Schulz, who then took a couple steps and sent his shot into the center of the goal.
The Comets added to their lead with a little less than five minutes remaining in the game. After receiving a pass from freshman David Magallon, freshman Chase Dunn scored on a breakaway from inside the box. The goal and assist was the first collegiate points for both players.
Olivet dominated the stat sheet with a 20-5 advantage in total shots. Schulz and junior Cory Werner-Hoskins topped the team with four shots apiece, while Petty had three. Junior Ryan Grashik earned the shutout win in goal, as he made four saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Comets are on the road Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game at Alma College.
