OLIVET, Mich. – Olivet College junior John Leutzinger (Washington Twp./Warren De La Salle) has been selected as the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Defensive Player of the Week for men's soccer. He is being honored for the first time this season and in his career.
Leutzinger anchored the Comets' defense that allowed only one goal in two MIAA wins last week. Olivet shutout Trine (Ind.) University, 1-0, Oct. 9 in Angola and then beat Adrian College, 3-1, Oct. 12 at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The wins allowed the Comets to move into a tie for third-place in the MIAA standings with a 4-3 record.
"John is taking this award on behalf of our whole back line," said Olivet Head Coach Dan Bulley. "He has taken a lot of grief from me and has risen to the challenges I have put in front of him, as have the other lads back there with him. We had a couple of fine defensive performances in the last two games and the one we call Big John, also one of our captains, is fully deserved of this award."
Olivet starts the second half of its league schedule tomorrow when it hosts Albion College at 4 p.m.
