ANGOLA, Ind. – Junior Jon Puente (Kalamazoo/Galesburg Augusta) scored a goal in the 75th minute and the Olivet College men's soccer team hung on to beat Trine (Ind.) University, 1-0, this afternoon at the Weaver Soccer field in Angola, Ind.
The Comets placed three shots on net in the first 45 minutes of play, but were unable to get one past the keeper. Olivet continued the offensive pressure in the second half, with seven shots in the first nine minutes. Puente finally broke through with the goal after receiving a pass from senior Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern).
Olivet recorded 15 total shots in the game. Puente and senior Adam Wright (Southend, England/Walled Lake Western) each had four shots. Junior Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) protected his second shutout of the season by making three saves on nine Thunder shots.
"We made hard work of a 1-0 win today," said Olivet Head Coach Dan Bulley. "Jon Puente's goal with Fred Smyser's assist got us the win. Although the performance was not exactly what I wanted, the guys needed this kind of result and the 1-0 game which we grinded out gave us a shutout that was well deserved. We move on from here and need a good performance on Saturday."
The Comets will wrap-up the first half of their league schedule Saturday when they host Adrian College at noon.
