Men’s soccer team defeated by Calvin, 4-3
A valiant comeback by the Olivet College men’s soccer team came up short today, as Calvin College hung on to beat the Comets, 4-3, at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.

OLIVET, Mich. – A valiant comeback by the Olivet College men's soccer team came up short today, as Calvin College hung on to beat the Comets, 4-3, at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Knights led 1-0 at halftime behind a goal by Sam Hanover in the 24th minute. Calvin added to its lead with a pair of goals in the first three minutes and 42 seconds of the second half to take a 3-0 lead.
Olivet got on the scoreboard for the first time in the 63rd minute when senior Connor Plagens scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Sophomore Matt Meldrum earned an assist on the goal.
In the 78th minute, the Comets cut their deficit down to one goal, 3-2, after senior Adam Wright made a penalty kick goal. Calvin pushed its lead back to two goals, 4-2, with a goal at the 86:57 mark.
Olivet scored its final tally with 18 seconds left in the game. Wright scored the goal, while freshman Dominic Mastromatteo was given the assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Grashik kept the game close by making 11 saves on 22 Knight shots. The Comets finished with 14 shots. Wright led the way with four, followed by sophomore Zach Schulz with three.
Olivet travels to play Hope College Saturday night at 7 p.m.
