Men’s soccer team suffers first loss of season to Calvin, 3-2
The No. 6 Olivet College men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to Calvin College, 3-2, this afternoon at Zuidema Field in Grand Rapids. The loss snaps the Comets’ 11-game winning streak and drops them into a tie for first-place with the Knights in the MIAA standings with 7-1 records.
Russell breaks Olivet's single-season assists record
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 6 Olivet College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to Calvin College, 3-2, this afternoon at Zuidema Field in Grand Rapids. The loss snaps the Comets' 11-game winning streak and drops them into a tie for first-place with the Knights in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) standings with 7-1 records.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 8:32 mark. Olivet quickly answered. On the restart, junior Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) took a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper and over the net, earning a corner kick. Off the corner, sophomore John Leutzinger (Washington/Warren DeLaSalle) knocked the ball to freshman Austin Dunn (Perry), who scored just 14 seconds after the Calvin goal. The score stayed 1-1 until 47 seconds left in the first half when the Knights pocketed the go-ahead goal.
Calvin took a 3-1 lead on a goal by Chris Nance in the 62nd minute. The Comets responded just one minute and 18 seconds later when freshman Cory Werner-Hoskins (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) found the back of the net. Sophomore Esteban Russell (DeWitt) earned the assist, which is his 11th of the season to break Olivet's single-season record. The previous record was 10 by Matt Wait during the 1998 campaign.
For the game, the Comets took 18 shots, placing six on-goal. Dunn led the way with four shots, while freshman Michael Moscone (Washington Twp./Warren DeLaSalle) and junior Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) each had three. Russell and sophomores Camden Iwasko (Livonia/Stevenson) and Jon Puente (Kalamazoo/Galesburg Augusta) finished with two shots apiece. In goal, sophomore Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) faced 25 shots and collected three saves.
Olivet returns to the field Saturday when it hosts Albion College at 2:30 p.m. The game is a part of a soccer doubleheader, as the Comet women will play Hope College at noon.
