Men’s soccer team blanks Hope, 2-0, for seventh straight win
In a battle of regionally-ranked teams, the Olivet College men’s soccer team blanked Hope College 2-0 tonight at the Van Andel Soccer Stadium in Holland. The Comets entered the game ranked No. 3 in the most recent NSCAA Central Region poll and No. 20 in the NSCAA National poll, while the Flying Dutchmen were No. 6 in the regional poll.
HOLLAND, Mich. – In a battle of regionally-ranked teams, the Olivet College men's soccer team blanked Hope College 2-0 tonight at the Van Andel Soccer Stadium in Holland. The Comets entered the game ranked No. 3 in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Central Region poll and No. 20 in the NSCAA National poll, while the Flying Dutchmen were No. 6 in the regional poll.
Olivet has won seven straight games and remains unbeaten this season with an 8-0-1 overall record, including a perfect 3-0 mark in the MIAA. Hope slips 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the league.
The Comets were the aggressor on offense in the first half, out-shooting the Flying Dutchmen, 9-3 and freshman Cory Werner-Hoskins (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) finding the back of the net twice. His first goal came in the 17th minute on a header from six yards out. The second goal was on a blast from 25 yards out in the 32nd minute.
The teams endured two weather delays in the second half. Hope turned up their offensive pressure in the half, out-shooting the Olivet, 12-5. But the Dutchmen failed to score.
Olivet finished the game with 14 shots, including five for sophomore Esteban Russell (DeWitt) and three each for Werner-Hoskins and sophomore Jon Puente (Kalamazoo/Galesburg Augusta). Between the pipes, sophomore Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) earned the shutout, recording four saves in 90 minutes.
The Comets will play their next three games at home. On Wednesday, Olivet welcomes Kalamazoo College to the Cutler Athletic Complex for a 4 p.m. game. The game will be a battle of 3-0 MIAA teams.
