Men’s soccer team extends unbeaten streak with 3-2 win over Mich.-Dearborn
Junior Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western) scored twice and the Olivet College men’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 3-2 win over University of Michigan-Dearborn this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The Comets are off to a 5-0-1 start for the 2012 season, while the Wolves’ record slips to 0-2.
OLIVET, Mich. – Junior Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western) scored twice and the Olivet College men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six games with a 3-2 win over University of Michigan-Dearborn this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The Comets are off to a 5-0-1 start for the 2012 season, while the Wolves' record slips to 0-2.
Wright scored his first goal only one minute and three seconds into the game. Sophomore John Leutzinger (Washington/Warren De La Salle) sent a high arching pass into the box, where Wright headed the ball into the goal. Wright scored a little more than 10 minutes later. Forwards Esteban Russell (DeWitt) and Cory Werner-Hoskins (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) each earned an assist on the goal.
The score stayed 2-0 until Mich.-Dearborn scored twice in a span of two minutes and 44 seconds in the second half. The Comets had several chances to score the go-ahead goal over the next 15 minutes. They finally broke through on a set piece. Russell served the ball into the box where sophomore Jon Puente (Kalamazoo/Galesburg Augusta) redirected the ball into the goal at the far post.
Olivet dominated the stat sheet with a 31-5 advantage in total shots, including 12-5 edge in shots-on-goal. The Comets also out-cornered the Wolves, 17-2. Russell led the way with 11 shots, while Werner-Hoskins and Wright were next with five apiece. Making his first start of the season in goal, sophomore Matt Van Houten (Northville) played all 90 minutes, collecting three saves.
Olivet will be right back in action tomorrow when they host Hanover (Ind.) College at noon.
