SPRING ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Esteban Russell (DeWitt) scored with 6:38 left to lift the Olivet College men's soccer team to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Spring Arbor University tonight at the Cougar Soccer Complex in Spring Arbor. With the win, the Comets improve to 2-0-1 on the young season, while it is the first loss in six games for Spring Arbor.
Spring Arbor took an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 14th minute. The score stayed that way until there were 15 seconds left in the half when sophomore Camden Iwasko (Livonia/Stevenson) scored for the Comets. Russell and sophomore Zach Schulz (Farmington) assisted on the goal.
Olivet took its first lead of the game in the eighth minute of the second when junior Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western) found the back of the net off a pass from junior Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern). The Cougars taied the game at the 82:48 mark. The Comets did not let that deter them and Russell scored what proved to be the game-winner only 34 seconds later. Smyser earned his second assist of the game.
Olivet goes in search of its third win Saturday when it hosts Case Western Reserve (Ohio) University in its home-opener. Case enters the game with a 2-1 record following a 2-1 double overtime win tonight at Muskingum (Ohio) University. Saturday's game at the Cutler Athletic Complex kicks off at 3 p.m.
