FRANKLIN, Ind. – Freshman Cory Werner-Hoskins (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) scored with 2:42 left in the second half, and the Olivet College men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Institute of Technology (RHIT) in a heavy rainstorm this afternoon at "Red" Faught Stadium in Franklin, Ind.
The only goal scored in the first half was by the Engineers with 4:10 left before the break. The score stayed that way until Werner-Hoskins' game-tying goal. Freshman Michael Moscone (Washington Twp./Warren De La Salle) crossed the ball into the box from the middle of the field, where Werner-Hoskins knocked the ball into an empty net at the far post.
In the first extra frame, Olivet had the only three shots. RHIT recorded the only four shots in the second extra period. Overall, the Comets had an edge on the stat sheet with 18-11 advantage in shots. Twelve of their shots were placed on-goal, while just four were on-goal for the Engineers.
Junior Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) topped Olivet with four shots. Werner-Hoskins and sophomore Esteban Russell (DeWitt) each tallied three shots. Sophomores Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) and Matt Van Houten (Northville) split time in goal and each keeper made one save. Lang was in net for the first half and both overtime periods, allowing the only goal. Van Houten played the second half.
"Our first half lacked some energy," said Olivet Head Coach Chad Wiseman. "But, the guys showed some great fight to find the equalizer late in the game. To finish the weekend with a 1-0-1 record was a good result to start the season"
The Comets return to Michigan and will travel to play Spring Arbor University Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
