Men’s golf team places 14th at Lou Collins Memorial
The Olivet College men’s golf team slipped to 14th-place of 17 teams at its own tournament, the Lou Collins Memorial at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek.
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Olivet College men's golf team slipped to 14th-place of 17 teams at its own tournament, the Lou Collins Memorial at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek.
After shooting a 321 in Friday's first round, the Comets shaved five strokes off their score on Saturday for a two-round total of 637 strokes. Owens Community College (Ohio) won the team championship with a 583 (298-285). Blaze Hogan from Owens was the tournament medalist with a 141 (72-69).
Freshmen Daniel Buehler (Delton/Hastings) and Matt Sherry (Salem Township/South Lyon East) both carded 156s to lead Olivet. Senior Nick Julian (Clinton Twp./Clintondale) was two strokes behind at 158. Sophomore Benjamin Hart (Rockford/Lowell) needed 167 strokes to complete his two rounds. Senior Chris Watkins (Bangor) posted a 176.
The Comets' "B" team had a 738 team score. Freshman Joseph Gauck (Belding/Lowell) finished at 170, followed by freshman Zachary Gray (Utica/East Detroit), 185; junior Jake Maas (Olivet), 186; freshman Jacob VanDeusen (Clinton Twp./Clintondale), 197.
Olivet now opens its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule next Thursday, Sept. 5 for the first of eight league jamborees. Albion is hosting the outing at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall, and it will have a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
