Men’s golf team wins 2010 Lou Collins Memorial Tournament
The debut for Head Coach Kevin Allard was outstanding, as the men’s golf team won the 2010 Lou Collins Memorial Tournament at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The debut for Head Coach Kevin Allard was outstanding, as the Olivet College men's golf team won the 2010 Lou Collins Memorial Tournament at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek. The Comets posted a two-round total of 605 strokes to win its own season-opening tournament for the fifth time. The tournament has been held every year since 1996.
Olivet stood in second-place after Friday's round, but improved by seven strokes today with a 299. Trine (Ind.) University and Wheaton (Ill.) College tied for second with a 609. Madonna University was fourth at 614, followed by Calvin (615), Hope (616), Adrian (620), Grand Rapids Community College (620), Alma (626), Albion (629), Spring Arbor (635), Aquinas (649) and Lourdes (672).
The Comets were led by freshman Nick Julian (Clinton Twp./Chippewa Valley) who earned all-tournament honors with a fifth-place finish with a 151. Freshman Ryan Bailey (Battle Creek/Lakeview) and senior Nick Harless (DeWitt) each shot a two-day total of 151 strokes. Junior Cameron Sich (Saginaw/Frankenmuth) was next at 156, followed by sophomore Justin Ardelean (Owosso) at 158.
"I am very happy with how we played today," said Allard. "We were in striking distance to start the day, and the guys went out and shot some nice rounds. We can celebrate the win, but we now have to focus on the start of MIAA play."
The Comets will return to Bedford Valley for the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association jamboree next Thursday, Sept. 9. Action begins with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
