OLIVET, Mich. -- Olivet College men's golfer Scott Miller, a native of Barrie, Ontario, Canada, has been named to the 2003 Verizon College Division Men's At-Large Academic All-America third team. He is only the second student-athlete in school history to be named to a national All-America team. Darren Zwick earned second-team honors in 1992 as a member of the men's basketball team.
Miller, who graduated summa cum laude with a 3.94 GPA in business administration, was a first-team Verizon All-District VI selection, making him eligble for the national team.
As a member of the men's golf team, Miller was a two-time first-team All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) selection. During the 2002 fall season, he narrowly missed league medalist honors by 0.05 strokes as the Fighting Comets won their league-leading 18th MIAA championship. Miller averaged 75.33 strokes per 18 holes and shot a season-low round of 70 strokes.
A total of 45 student-athletes from around the country were named to the first, second and third at-large teams. Miller was the only Michigan college student-athlete on the national teams.
The Verizon Academic All-America program recognizes student-athlete who have succeeded on the field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected by votes from CoSIDA, the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. To be eligble, the student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.0.
