Men’s basketball team tripped up by Calvin, 69-56
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men’s basketball team closed out the first half of its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule with a 69-56 loss Calvin University tonight at the Cutler Event Center.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's basketball team closed out the first half of its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule with a 69-56 loss Calvin University tonight at the Cutler Event Center.

- Records: Olivet 8-10 overall, 4-3 MIAA; Calvin 15-3 overall, 7-0 MIAA
- Early in the first half, the Knights led by five points twice. After the last time at 16-11 at the 10:11 mark, Olivet scored back-to-back baskets to trim its deficit down to one point. Calvin then went on a 15-4 run to extend its lead to 12 points, 31-19, with 2:31 left until halftime. A basket for the Comets made the score 35-25 at halftime.
- Olivet opened the second half on a 9-4 run to cut the Knight lead in half. Calvin stretched its lead back to eight points two more times. Following the second time at 44-36, the Comets used an 8-3 spurt to close the deficit down to three points, 47-44, with the 13:29 remaining. Olivet did not get any closer for the rest of the game.
- For the game, Calvin made one more basket than the Comets, 23 to 22. Both teams drained three shots from behind the arc. The Knights were 17-of-20 from the free throw line compared to 6-of-7 for Olivet.
- Sophomore Lorris Upshaw scored a team-best 11 points.
- Senior Derrick Johnson was next with 10 points.
- Freshman Haidyn Garrison shared game-high honors with 11 rebounds.
- "I give a lot of credit first to Calvin for playing the way they always play," said Olivet head coach Sam Hargraves. "I was pretty disappointed in our level of toughness. Thought we would rise to the occasion emotionally a little better. We'll regroup and learn, and we've got 7 more chances."
- Jalen Overway posted a double-double, 18 points and 11 rebounds.
- Marcus Bolt had 17 points.
- Olivet hosts Trine (Ind.) University Saturday at 3 p.m.
