FREELAND, Mich. – Olivet College senior Eric Ewing has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Week for men's basketball.
Ewing posted a double-double average, 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, in helping the Comets split a pair of non-conference games last week. In a 97-79 win over Heidelberg (Ohio) University, he scored 25 points and hauled in 15 rebounds. Ewing shot 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the floor, including 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from behind the arc, while 14 of his rebounds were off the defensive glass. He followed that performance by scoring 14 points and pulling down five rebounds in a 76-74 loss to Earlham (Ind.) College. Ewing made 5-of-10 baskets and 4-of-4 free throws for the 14 points. For the week, he also had eight assists and four steals.
"Eric has done a great job adjusting to a new style and a new system," said interim head coach Steve Ernst. "He has taken his role as a senior captain to heart and his play has improved accordingly. Eric needs to continue to be consistent for us to be dangerous."
Ewing and the Comets are back in action tonight for an exhibition contest at Saginaw Valley State University. Olivet then travels to play Manchester (Ind.) University Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
