Men’s basketball team loses heartbreaker to Hope, 65-60
The men’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Hope College, 65-60, tonight at the DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland.
HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Olivet College men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Hope College, 65-60, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest tonight at the DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland. With the loss, Olivet stays in a tie for second-place with Adrian, Albion, Calvin and Kalamazoo in the MIAA standings with a 6-5 record.
In the first half, neither team led by more than three points and there were 12 tied scores. The Flying Dutchmen held a 29-27 lead at halftime. In the early stages of the second half, Hope took a four-point lead on three occasions with the last time being 37-33 at the 16:44 mark.
The Comets battled back and took a pair of three-point leads, including 42-39, with 14:21 left. The teams traded baskets before the Flying Dutchmen took their largest lead of the game, 53-48, at the 6:03 mark. They had another five-point lead, 55-50. Three times, Olivet trimmed its deficit down to one point. Hope sealed its win by making 4-of-4 free throws in the final eight seconds.
For the game, the Comets shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) to 41.7 percent (25-of-60) for the Flying Dutchmen. Hope made one more basket from behind the arc and was 12-of-14 from the free throw line to 8-of-12 for Olivet.
Senior Michael McClary (Bellaire) had game-highs in points (21) and rebounds (13) to record his 10th double-double of the season, including eighth in MIAA play. Junior Eric Mack (Eastpointe/Roseville) matched his career-high with 12 points, while junior Jaren Edsall (Whitehall) added 10 points.
The Flying Dutchmen placed four players in double figures. Logan Neil came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points. David Krombeen added 12 points, followed by Adam Dickerson and Nate Snuggerud with 10 apiece. Dickerson and Will Bowser each grabbed eight rebounds.
The Comets return home to face Trine (Ind.) University Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
NOTE: McClary made 9-of-14 baskets for his 21 points. He now has 230 field goals made and 441 field attempts this season, which breaks the single-season school record. McClary previously held the record at 222 made and 430 attempts during the 2009-10 season.
