Men's basketball team loses to Calvin, 90-72, in MIAA Tournament semifinals
The Olivet College men’s basketball team was defeated by Calvin College, 90-72, this evening in the semifinals of the 2009 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament at the Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids.

With the win, the Knights advance to play Hope College in the championship game tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. With the loss, the Comets end their season with a 13-14 overall record.
Calvin shot 80.8 percent (21-of-26) from the floor and led by 21 points, 51-30, at halftime. Olivet scored the first eight points of the second half to trim its deficit down to 13 points, 51-38. The Knights stretched their lead back to as many as 20 points, 73-53, at the 7:36 mark. The Comets made it a 13-point game twice, but they would not get any closer.
For the game, Calvin made 33-of-55 (50%) baskets, including 9-of-17 (52.9%) three-pointers. The Knights also had a 28-21 edge in rebounding.
Playing in his final collegiate game, senior Brandon McClary (Bellaire) led Olivet with 14 points. Sophomore Michael McClary (Bellaire) scored 12, while sophomore Andre Evans (Muskegon/Muskegon Heights) had 11, and junior Joel Kerns (North Judson, Ind.) had 10. Kerns also grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds.
John Mantel was one of four Calvin players in double figures, scoring a game-high 20 points. Matt Veltema came off the bench to score 19 points with four 3-pointers. Dustin Smith and Caleb Veldhouse each finished with 13 points. Mantel also pulled down seven rebounds.
NOTES: Olivet broke four single-season team records: games played (27), rebounds (983), field goals attempted (1,696) and blocks (126). Evans set a new single-season record in free throw percentage, as he drained 55-of-59 free throws for 93.2 percent. Brandon McClary's 200 field goals made ranks second and 480 points is fourth all-time for a single-season. Michael McClary's 42 blocks is tied for second in a season. Ironically, he is tied with himself, as he also had 42 last season.
