Men’s basketball team falls to Calvin, 72-61
The Olivet College men’s basketball team rallied from 14 points down in the first half to take a 36-35 lead into the locker rooms, but Calvin College outscored the Comets, 37-25, in the second half to pull out a 72-61 victory today at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.

In the first half, the Knights led by 14 points twice with the last time being 31-17 at the 9:02 mark. Over the next five minutes, Olivet went on an 11-0 scoring spurt to cut its deficit to three points. After the Knights went back ahead by five points on a tip-in basket from Tyler Zoerhof, junior Andy Clark (Lansing/Perry) scored eight straight points for the Comets to put them ahead 36-33 with 41 seconds left in the first half. Caleb Veldhouse drained two free throws to make the score 36-35 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Olivet never led by more than three points. After freshman Jaren Edsall (Whitehall) tied the game at 48-48, Danny Rodts put Calvin ahead for good with a three-pointer. The Knights' largest lead of the game would be the 11-point margin of victory.
For the game, Calvin shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor and out-rebounded the Comets, 38-32. Olivet turned the ball over only nine times to 14 for the Knights.
Offensively for the Comets, Clark tied his season-high and led all scorers with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-6 from behind the arc. Senior Brandon McClary (Bellaire) finished with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomores Michael McClary (Bellaire) and Joe Post (Olivet) each had nine points. Michael McClary also grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore Andre Evans (Muskegon/Muskegon Heights) dished out six assists.
Calvin placed three starters in double figures, led by Veldhouse's 14 points. Dustin Smith was next with 11 points. John Mantel added 10 points, while Mike Zwier contributed eight rebounds.
Olivet will play its final two regular season games next week. On Wednesday, the Comets will travel to play Alma College at 8 p.m., and on Saturday, they will host Adrian College at 3 p.m.
