Bio

Dan Simrell is his fifth season as an assistant football coach at Olivet College in 2019. He is serving as the quarterbacks coach.

Simrell came to Olivet from Trine (Ind.) University, where he had been the quarterbacks coach since 2007. In summer 2008 and 2009, Simrell served as head coach of the Bologna Warriors of the National Football League of Italy. In 2008, he led the team to a 10-1 record and to an appearance in the Italian SuperBowl XXVIII.

Prior to Trine, Simrell served as head football coach at NCAA Division II University of Findlay from 2000-06. In 2002, he was named the Region 3 Division II Coach of the Year.

Simrell has also served as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at West Virginia University. In his eight seasons, the Mountaineers played in five bowl games and were the 1993 Big East Champions.

Simrell also spent from 1982-89 as the head coach at NCAA Division I University of Toledo. The Rockets won the 1984 Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship under his leadership, and was once named Ohio Coach of the Year and MAC Coach of the Year. In 1996, Toledo honored Simrell with an induction into the University of Toledo Hall of Fame.

As a football player at Toledo, Simrell was named team captain and most valuable player in his senior season. In 1965, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League.

Simrell received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Toledo.
