Football: Olivet falls short at Wooster, 24-22

WOOSTER, Ohio – The University of Olivet football team battled back from a 21-0 halftime deficit before falling to the College of Wooster, 24-22, today at John P. Papp Stadium.

- Records: Olivet 1-1 overall, Wooster 1-1 overall
- After receiving the opening kickoff, the Comets marched down the field but missed a 23-yard field goal.
- The Scots took over at their 20-yard line. On the 13th play of their drive, Jarvin Mims Jr. rushed two yards into the end zone. The PAT kick was good.
- Wooster extended its lead to 14-0 lead on the first possession of the second quarter. The drive was set up when Olivet turned the ball over on downs at the Wooster 37.
- Later in the second stanza, the Comets fumbled the ball and returned it to the Olivet 35. On their third play, the Scots scored a touchdown and the ensuing PAT kick split the uprights to make the score 21-0 at the break.
- The Comets scored their first two points of the game when senior Dennis Simmons tackled the quarterback in the end zone for a safety.
- Following the free kick, Olivet put together an 11-play, 49-yard scoring drive. Junior Evan Ormsby completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to senior SirQuarius Ball for the touchdown, and freshman Wesley Franco made the PAT kick.
- There was no scoring until the fourth quarter. With 6:47 left in the game, Ormsby threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Cole Shoobridge. The PAT kick by Franco was good to make the score 21-16.
- The Scots pushed their lead to eight points, 24-16, when Lake Barrett made a 33-yard field goal with 3:30 remaining.
- With 59 seconds left on the game clock, Olivet trimmed its deficit to two points when sophomore Dontal Wright found the end zone from a yard out. A two-point conversion pass attempt was broken up by Wooster.
- The Scots recovered the on-side kick and two kneel downs ended the game.
- Olivet finished the game with 446 yards of offense to 360 yards for Wooster.
- Sophomore Samuel Kunnuji led the ground game with 17 carries for 136 yards.
- Wright had 13 carries for 67 yards.
- Ormsby threw for 171 yards on 15-of-30 passing.
- Ball caught five passes for 60 yards.
- Senior Ricky Williams topped the defense with nine tackles.
- Simmons notched eight tackles, with two for minus 13 yards.
- Olivet hosts Hanover (Ind.) College next Saturday, September 16, for its home-opener at the Cutler Athletic Complex. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
