Football team loses triple overtime heartbreaker to Trine, 39-37
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College football team fell to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Trine (Ind.) University in a triple overtime thriller, 39-37, this afternoon inside the Cutler Athletic Complex.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College football team fell to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Trine (Ind.) University in a triple overtime thriller, 39-37, this afternoon inside the Cutler Athletic Complex.

- The Thunder forced overtime when Colton Wampler made a 32-yard field goal with two seconds left in the fourth quarter.
- To start overtime, Trine won the coin toss and elected to go on defense first. In the first overtime and on a third and 8 play, sophomore Evan Ormsby tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to senior Jalen Broussard. Senior Samuel Roose made the PAT kick. The Thunder answered with a 22-yard touchdown pass on its first overtime series. The PAT kick was good.
- Xaine Kirby rushed three yards into the end zone to put Trine up 37-31 in the second overtime. Having to go over two, a pass play was batted down in the back of the end zone. Facing a long third down and later a fourth down, Olivet was able to keep its drive alive. On the ninth play, senior Nyassinu Crowell, Jr. tied the game with a 4-yard touchdown run. A rush attempt for the two-point attempt was stopped short of the goal line.
- To start the third overtime, NCAA rules dictate the schools have one play from the three-yard line for a two-point conversion. The Comets tried to run for the two points and did not get into the end zone. Trine won the game on pass play from Alex Price to Kale Lawson.
- After Trine scored a touchdown on its first possession of the game, Olivet scored a touchdown in the first, second and third quarters for 21 straight points to go up 21-6.
- A 20-yard touchdown pass and subsequent two-point conversion late in the third quarter helped the Thunder make it a one-possession game, 21-14.
- The Comets pushed their lead back to 10 points with 6:59 left in the game when Roose booted a 22-yard field goal.
- Facing fourth down, Price completed a 41-yard touchdown pass with 3:49 left in regulation to make the score 24-21.
- On its ensuing drive, Olivet was able to get one first down before being forced to punt the ball back to Trine at the 1:37 mark.
- The Thunder was able to convert another fourth down with a 35-yard pass play down to the Comet 10-yard line to set the stage for Wampler's tying field goal in the final seconds.
- For the game, Olivet had 376 yards of offense, 157 on the ground and 219 passing.
- Crowell, Jr. led the ground game with 20 carries for 94 yards.
- Freshman Samuel Kannuji had 12 rushes for 73 yards.
- Ormsby completed 12-of-22 passes for 157 yards.
- Broussard hauled in six catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
- Senior Logan Fee topped the defense with nine tackles.
- Senior David Curl finished with six tackles, including five for minus 14 yards.
- The Comets travel to play Hope College next Saturday, October 22. Kick-off from Ray and Sue Smith Stadium in Holland is 2 p.m.
