Olivet opened the 2018 season with a heartbreaking 21-17 loss Sept. 1 at Heidelberg University. The Comets led 17-7 before the Student Princes scored two touchdowns in the final five minutes and 26 seconds for the come-from-behind win. Olivet totaled 379 yards of offense, 148 on the ground and 231 through the air. Matthew Ellis had 19 carries for 105 yards. Jamaul Martin finished with 59 rushing yards on 15 carries. Lane completed 15-of-30 passes for the 231 yards. Jacob Jodway caught three passes for 104 yards. Defensively, Chase Cavric had a team-leading 10 tackles, including 1.5 quarterback sacks and six solo stops. Mo Young and Tyler Mojet each tallied seven total tackles. John Adams III intercepted two passes.
Concordia kicked-off its 2018 campaign with a 36-10 win over Beloit (Wis.) College Sept. 1 in River Forest, Illinois. The Cougars' offense was highlighted by 465 rushing yards and four touchdowns, with 303 of the yards and two touchdowns belonging to Lance Moise. Concordia gained just 88 yards through the air, as Griffin Beaudette made his first start under center and completed 14-of-26 passes. Rodolfo Payan topped the defense with 17 tackles, while Matt Henning had 14 tackles, including 2.5 for negative yards.
