Five Olivet College football players earn Academic All-District honors
Five Olivet College football players have earned 2008 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV honors.
OLIVET, Mich. – Five Olivet College football players have earned 2008 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV honors. Junior defensive back Alex Hill (Berrien Springs) is a first-team selection and advances to the national college division Academic All-America® ballot. Senior offensive linemen Phil Koops (Hamilton) and Mark VanLente (Saugatuck/Hamilton), junior fullback Sean Misko (Casco/Richmond) and senior defensive back Michael Terranova (Lansing/Lansing Catholic) are second-team selections.
Hill has a 3.78 grade point average (GPA) in an elementary physical education major. He has started in eight games for the Comets and is fifth on the team with 42 total tackles, including 25 solo stops. Hill ranks first on the team with six interceptions and is tied with Terranova for the team lead in pass breakups (six).
Koops, who carries a 3.73 GPA in a social studies major, and VanLente, who has a 3.73 GPA in a criminal justice and psychology double major, have started all nine games on the offensive line for Olivet. Koops began the year at center, but has moved to tackle for the last two games. VanLente has been the starter at guard in every game.
Misko, a secondary math major with a 3.62 GPA, has been the starting fullback in every game for the Comets. He has carried the ball 43 times for 205 yards and five touchdowns. Misko's 30 points scored are third on the team.
Terranova has posted a 3.312 GPA in insurance and risk management. He has started every game and is second on the team with 60 total tackles, 30 solo and 30 assisted stops.
Olivet will conclude its season next Saturday, Nov. 15, when it hosts Adrian College. Kickoff from the Cutler Athletic Complex is 6 p.m.
The Academic All-America® program recognizes student-athletes who have succeeded in athletic competition and in the classroom. The members of the All-District IV teams are selected by sports information directors in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be eligible, the student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30.
