Carney named MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The University of Olivet junior Bryan Carney has been voted the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Bryan pitched a complete game, three-hitter to help the baseball team win 2-1 over Hope College on Friday, April 11 at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. He struck out 13 batters and walked only two batters (both in the first inning) over the nine innings. The 13 punchouts are the second-most by an UOlivet pitcher since the 2001 season and it is the first complete game in his three seasons at Olivet.
Carney faced only five batters more than the minimum, while throwing 130 pitches, which 81 were strikes. The only run he allowed was a solo home run in the seventh inning. The Comets tied the game in the eighth inning and walked-off with the win in the ninth.
"Being named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week is a very well-deserved honor for Bryan," said Olivet head baseball coach Santiago Mendez. "He worked hard in the off season because he wants to be one of the top pitchers in the conference. When Bryan's on the mound, we know we have a good chance to win the game."
The Comets return to the field Wednesday when they travel to play Albion College for a nine-inning game at 4 p.m.
