Upton’s pitching and three home runs help baseball team win 11-4 over Trine
OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Ryan Upton threw seven strong innings and timely hitting helped the Olivet College baseball team beat Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Trine (Ind.) University, 11-4, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Ryan Upton threw seven strong innings and timely hitting helped the Olivet College baseball team beat Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Trine (Ind.) University, 11-4, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

- The Comets wasted no time in taking a 1-0 lead as leadoff hitter Alex Rose deposited a 1-2 pitch over the fence in center field in the bottom of first inning.
- Olivet added to its lead in the second inning when sophomore Mason Cook hit a solo home run on a 0-1 pitch.
- The Thunder loaded the bases in the fourth inning and tied the game on a two-out RBI-single.
- In the fifth inning, the Comets used a two-out rally to push across five runs. After senior Sylas Woll was hit by a pitch to fill the bases, junior Gabriel Kirck hit a double to shallow left field to score two runs. Sophomore Ben Helgevold followed with his own two-run double. He then stole third base and on the throw to third, the throw from the catcher went into left field to allow Helgevold to scamper home with the final run of the inning.
- Trine added a run in the top of sixth on a sacrifice fly.
- Olivet answered with four runs in its half of the sixth frame. The first two batters reached on singles, and Rose then hit a single to score freshman Braden Abbott with the first run. After a sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position, Kirck smashed a home run deep over the right field fence.
- The Thunder plated their final run in the eighth and went down in order in the ninth.
- On the mound, Upton earned his first win of the season, throwing 111 total pitchers (66 for strikes). He allowed the four runs, while allowing 10 hits and three walks over seven plus innings.
- Sophomore Wyatt Leland pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
- At the plate, Olivet had 11 hits as seven of nine starters had at least one hit. The other two starters reached base safely at least once.
- Rose was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
- Kirck recorded two hits, two runs and five RBI.
- Sophomore Ethan VanLannen collected two hits and scored two runs.
- Trine registered 12 hits, with 11 singles and one double.
- Matthew Martin, Easton Rhodes, Jackson O'Keefe and Daniel Rumberger each had two hits.
- Rumberger tallied three RBI.
- Dominic Skinner suffered the pitching loss in relief of starter Luke Cline. Skinner gave up the five fifth-inning runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. Cline started and gave just the two solo home runs over the first four innings.
- Olivet hosts Albion College Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
