Baseball team routs Principia, 19-7, for first win of 2022 season
ELSAH, Ill. – The Olivet College baseball team scored 12 runs in the second inning en route to a 19-7 lopsided win over Principia (Ill.) College in a non-league game tonight under the lights at Cheatham Stadium.

ELSAH, Ill. – The Olivet College baseball team scored 12 runs in the second inning en route to a 19-7 lopsided win over Principia (Ill.) College in a non-league game tonight under the lights at Cheatham Stadium.

- The Comets pushed across three runs in the top half of the first inning. Two of the runs were scored on RBI-doubles by seniors Matt Hewitt and Ben Compton.
- The Panthers answered with three runs in their half of the first to tie the game.
- In the second inning, the first 10 Olivet batters reached safely and all 10 came around to score. Later in the inning, two more runs crossed the plate.
- Neither team scored any runs until the fifth inning when senior Trevor Savage blasted a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left-center field for a three-run homer.
- Principia plated in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth.
- The Comets capped the scoring with a run in the seventh inning.
- Hewitt reached base safely in his first five plate appearances, as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a single and two walks.
- Savage also collected three hits to go along with four RBI.
- Hewitt and Savage each scored three runs.
- Compton was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
- Senior Matt Fisher had two hits, two runs and two RBI.
- On the mound, sophomore Keegan Kuha pitched the first four innings and gave up three runs on four hits and five walks. He struck out eight batters.
- Olivet's 19 runs are tied for the sixth-most in school history for a game.
- As a team, Olivet hit four doubles for 26 in five games this season. The 5.20 per game average ranks third among all NCAA Division III schools. The 26 total doubles is tied for 11th but all of the schools ranked ahead of the Comets have played at least 10 games.
- Tim Eissler tallied three of the seven Panther hits.
- Jack Adler registered two hits.
- Five different players drove in one run apiece.
- Casey Golbiw suffered the pitching loss after surrendering 15 runs (14 earned) on 11 hits and six walks over the first two innings.
- Olivet and Principia face each other for a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 12:30 p.m. CT.
