Baseball team loses game one to Calvin, 9-5, drops suspended game, 10-5
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team lost game one of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader to Calvin University, 9-5, Saturday, April 10, at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The Knights also won the nightcap, 10-5, which was completed this afternoon after being suspended by lightning on Saturday.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team lost game one of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader to Calvin University, 9-5, Saturday, April 10, at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The Knights also won the nightcap, 10-5, which was completed this afternoon after being suspended by lightning on Saturday.

- The Knights scored one run in the second inning and three runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead.
- The Comets trimmed their deficit in half when senior Logan Sella blasted a two-run home run over the fence in center field in the home half of the third.
- Calvin answered with three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to go up 9-2.
- Olivet scored one run in the fifth inning and capped its scoring with two runs in the seventh.
- Olivet had an 11 to 10 advantage in hits.
- Sella was 3-for-4, finishing a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
- Sophomore Daniel Ballagh tallied two hits.
- Freshman Keegan Kuha was the losing pitcher after giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits over the first three innings.
- Sophomore Tanner Finn tossed four innings of relief and allowed five runs on six hits.
- Carson Warners was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
- Caden Penn had two hits and drove in three runs.
- Andrew Hung and Ricky Padilla each recorded two hits.
- On the mound, Peter VanDyken picked up the win and Eli Johnson earned the save. VanDyken threw five and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs on nine hits. Johnson pitched the final inning and one-third, allowing two hits.
- Calvin pushed across three runs in the first and third innings for a 6-0 lead.
- After the Comets batted in the bottom of the third, the game was suspended because of a thunderstorm.
- Olivet used a two-out rally to trim their deficit in half by scoring three runs in the fifth inning. After getting back-to-back singles to start the inning, and a double play turned by the defense, freshman Alex Curry hit an RBI-double to score sophomore Tyler Campbell. A single by junior Matt Hewitt put runners at the corner bases. A squeeze bunt single by senior Matt Fisher scored Curry and advanced Hewitt to third base. The Comets then executed a perfect double steal, as Fisher went to second and Hewitt slid under the tag at the plate.
- The Knights got those three runs back in the sixth inningand another run in the top half of the seventh to go up 10-3.
- Olivet plated a pair of runs in its half of the seventh inning. Hewitt hit an RBI-triple over the center fielder's head to score Curry. Fisher then lined a single into center to score Hewitt.
- After being no-hit in the first three innings, Olivet finished the game with 11 hits.
- Curry, Fisher and Hewitt each went 2-for-3.
- Curry and Hewitt scored two runs apiece.
- Senior Ryan Rivard threw the first three innings on Saturday, and gave up six runs on seven hits to be charged with the loss.
- Curry tossed today's final four innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.
- The Knights recorded 15 hits, as seven different players each had hits.
- Hung hit two doubles and drove in three runs.
- Hayden White threw three perfect innings, with five strikeouts, before the game was suspended. He then surrendered three runs on six hits over two innings today to be credited with the win.
- Brayden Schoonbeck pitched two innings of relief.
- Olivet has announced that Wednesday's non-conference game against Kalamazoo College has been cancelled. Instead the Comets will play a doubleheader next Wednesday, April 21, at Kalamazoo, starting at 2 p.m. Olivet will be back in action Saturday when it starts a four-game MIAA series against Trine (Ind.) University. The first two games are at the Cutler Athletic Complex, and the last two games are Jannen Field in Angola. Both doubleheaders will start at 1 p.m.
