Baseball team swept by Calvin, 17-12 and 19-2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team began a four-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) series against Calvin University by losing two games, 17-12 and 19-2, at the CU Baseball Field.

- After the Knights scored two runs in the bottom of first inning, the Comets answered with two runs in their half of the second inning. Back-to-back singles to start the inning, followed by a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position. A squeeze bunt by sophomore Daniel Ballagh scored junior Ben Compton, and an RBI-single by sophomore Tyler Campbell scored freshman Matthew Fennell.
- Calvin took the lead back with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning.
- Olivet took the lead back, 6-3, with four runs in the third inning. Three straight singles loaded the bases for Compton, who ripped an RBI-single into left field to score junior Matt Hewitt. Fennell reached on an error to score senior Matt Fisher. Another error pushed across the final two runs in the inning.
- The Comets added to their lead on a solo home run by senior Logan Sella in the fifth inning.
- The Knights battled for an 8-7 lead after scoring five runs in the last half of the fifth.
- In the sixth inning, Olivet grabbed the lead back, 12-8, when Fisher lined a two-run single and Compton hit a three-run home run.
- Calvin batted around and scored nine runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- Olivet out-hit Calvin, 13-12.
- The top four batters in the lineup combined to go 11-for-16.
- Compton, Fisher and Hewitt each had three hits, while Sella had two hits.
- Compton drove in four runs and scored three runs.
- Sella also crossed the plate three times.
- Sella was charged with the pitching loss, as he gave up the final six runs on three hits and two walks.
- Ricky Padilla went 4-for-5.
- Also posting a multi-hit game were Nick Vogel and Carson Warners.
- Damion Pompey had one hit but scored three runs from the leadoff spot in the lineup.
- Matt Raymond hit a home run, drove in three and scored two runs.
- Jake Monroe earned the pitching win in relief of starter Mark Primus.
- The Knights scored at least one run in every inning, including a seven-run second and a five-run third.
- The Comets had single tallies in the fourth and seventh innings.
- Freshman Alex Curry recorded two of Olivet's seven hits. One of the hits was a double.
- Sella hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the Comets' run in the seventh inning.
- On the mound, senior Max Daust lasted only one inning, and allowed 10 runs (four earned) on six hits.
- Senior Zac Walter finished the game in relief and surrendered eight earned runs on 11 hits. He struck out five.
- The Knights pounded out 17 hits, with four doubles and four home runs.
- Pompey was 3-for-4 with a double, home run, three runs and an RBI.
- Nick Vogel also had three hits, while scoring three runs and driving in three.
- Caden Penn and Dylan Williams each collected three RBI.
- Zach Thor threw the complete game, scattering seven hits, while striking out seven to improve his season record to 2-2.
- The four-game series is scheduled to be completed tomorrow with a doubleheader at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. First pitch from game one is 1 p.m.
