Baseball team swept at Trine, 8-3 and 9-6

The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Trine (Ind.) University in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader today at Jannen Field in Angola, Ind. The Thunder won by scores of 8-3 and 9-6.

In the first game, Olivet dented the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the first inning on a two-run single by senior Brad Sullens (Belleville). Trine took an 8-2 lead with four runs in the second and fourth innings. The Comets got only one run back in the fifth after junior Ben Kosmalski (Canton/Plymouth) tripled and scored on senior Erik McCloud's (Holly) team-leading 12th double of the season.

For the game, Olivet was held to just six hits. Kosmalski led the way with three hits, two singles and a triple. On the mound, junior Brad Beisiegel (Royal Oak) suffered the loss, as he threw six innings and allowed eight runs on 10 hits. He tied his season-high with seven strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Thunder took a 7-0 lead with four runs in the first, two runs in the second and one run in the third. The Comets scored two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by junior Beau Felix (Hartland). Trine answered with a run in the home half of the fourth inning. Each team then pushed across an unearned run in its half of the sixth. After two outs were recorded in the seventh, Olivet scored three runs. After a pinch hit single by freshman Ed VanStrate (Owosso), freshman Ryan Pitt (Imlay City) hit a two-run homer. Following a pitching change, Felix hit his second home run of the game and fifth of the season.

The Comets finished the game with 10 hits. Junior Braydon LaFramboise (Flushing/Mt. Morris) went 2-for-2 at the dish. Felix had the two home runs. On the mound, freshman Jay Magro (Bridgman) was tagged for the loss. He gave up eight runs on 10 hits in four innings. Junior Aaron Campbell (Lansing/Waverly) allowed the unearned run on two hits in two innings.

Olivet will close out the 2010 season tomorrow when it hosts Trine for a doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m. Between games, the Comets will recognize their four seniors who will be in uniform for the final time.
