The Comets took a 4-0 lead with a four-run top half of the first inning. Junior Brandon Goodman (Portage/Central) led off the game with an infield single and stole second. He moved to third on a single by freshman Braydon LaFramboise (Flushing/Mt. Morris). LaFramboise advanced to second on a passed ball. Junior Scott Purdy (Traverse City/West) struck out but reached first base when the third strike resulted in a wild pitch.
An error allowed Goodman to score, and a groundout from Rob Swanson (Marshall) scored LaFramboise. Singles by sophomore Matt Smoker (Bronson) and freshman Phil Sullens (Belleville) scored Purdy and senior Eric Quinn (Port Huron/Northern), respectively.
The Leopards closed to within one run, 4-3, with one run in the first and two more runs in the second. Olivet added to its lead with an unearned run in the fourth inning. Wentworth regained the lead with a seven-run fifth inning.
LaFramboise and Sullens each finished the game with two hits. Quinn scored two runs. On the mound, freshman Brad Beisiegel (Royal Oak) was charged with the loss. He went five innings and gave up 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits, while striking out six. Freshman Sean Alexander (Fenton) and LaFramboise pitched in relief.
The Comets are now idle until next Wednesday, March 19, when it hosts Rochester College for a single, nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
