Baseball team swept by Adrian, 17-4 and 21-7
The Olivet College baseball team was swept in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader by Adrian College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The teams combined for 49 runs and 61 hits, as the Bulldogs won by scores of 17-4 and 21-7.

The Olivet College baseball team was swept in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader by Adrian College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The teams combined for 49 runs and 61 hits, as the Bulldogs won by scores of 17-4 and 21-7.
In the first game, Adrian (25-8, 17-5 MIAA) took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Olivet (15-19, 13-9 MIAA) answered with two runs in its half of the first. Freshman Ben Kosmalski (Canton/Plymouth) and junior Brandon Goodman (Portage/Central) drew back-to-back walks. After a groundout moved them each up one base, senior Michael Katlin (Howell) brought them home on a double to shallow centerfield.
The Bulldogs regained the lead with a run in the second inning and never looked back. The Comets got two runs back on a two-run single for Katlin in the fourth inning. The single brought in junior Ryan Hodges (Swartz Creek) and Goodman. Adrian finished the game by scoring at least one run in every inning.
For the game, Kosmalski reached base three times, two times via a base hit and once via a walk. Katlin also had two hits and drove in four runs, while Goodman scored twice. On the mound, Katlin was credited with the loss, as he gave up six runs (three earned) on eight hits in three innings of work.
In the nightcap, Adrian struck for one run in the top half of the first inning. Olivet tied the game with a home run by Hodges to lead off the bottom half of the first inning. The Bulldogs answered with a six-run second and five-run third.
Five consecutive doubles to start the Comets' half of the third resulted in four runs. The order for the doubles was Kosmalski, Goodman, junior Scott Purdy (Traverse City/West), Katlin and sophomore Matt Smoker (Bronson). Adrian did not let up, as it scored seven runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.
For the game, Goodman and Smoker each had two hits. Goodman had a single and double, while Smoker had two doubles. Smoker also collected two RBI. Freshman Brad Beisiegel (Royal Oak) was the losing pitcher, allowing 12 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits over two and one-third innings.
Adrian and Olivet will complete the four-game series Saturday when they play a doubleheader at Adrian's Nicolay Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
