The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Calvin College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader today at the Calvin Field in Grand Rapids. The Knights won by scores of 4-2 and 3-2.
In the first game, Olivet (11-14, 9-6 MIAA) pushed across a run in the second inning on a RBI-single by junior Rob Swanson (Marshall). The single scored sophomore Matt Smoker (Bronson), who had reached base on a single to the right-centerfield gap and moved to second on freshman Phil Sullen's (Belleville) infield single. The Comets made the score 2-0 when junior Brandon Goodman (Portage/Central) cranked a solo home run to lead off the third.
Calvin (21-6, 13-4 MIAA) came back to tie the game at 2-2 with two runs in the home half of the third inning. The Knights took the lead for good with a two-run fourth inning.
Offensively, five different Comets each had a base hit. The only extra base hit was Goodman's homer. On the mound, senior David Pembroke (Bay City/John Glenn) suffered the loss. He allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings of work.
In the nightcap, Olivet scored a run in the first inning when Goodman drew a walk to lead off the game, stole second and scored on a single by Smoker. Calvin immediately answered with a run its half of the first.
The Comets responded with a run in the second inning. With two outs, Swanson singled down the left field line, went to second on a single by Goodman, advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a single by freshman Ben Kosmalski (Canton/Plymouth). Like the first game, the Knights scored the winning runs in the fourth.
Olivet out-hit Calvin, 7-6. Goodman, Kosmalski and Smoker each had two hits, all singles. Freshman lefty Sean Alexander (Fenton) was charged with the pitching loss, giving up three runs (two earned).
The Comets will travel to Ypsilanti for a nine-inning non-conference game against Eastern Michigan University tomorrow, beginning at 5 p.m. Calvin and Olivet will complete their four-game league series Saturday with a doubleheader in Olivet at 1 p.m.
