Baseball team beats Emerson, 9-5 and Wesley, 14-9
The Olivet College baseball team won a pair of games today in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Comets defeated Emerson (Mass.) College, 9-5, and came from behind to beat Wesley (Del.) College, 14-9.

The Olivet College baseball team won a pair of games today in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Comets defeated Emerson (Mass.) College, 9-5, and came from behind to beat Wesley (Del.) College, 14-9.
In the first game, Olivet scored three runs in the second inning, three more in the third and one in the fourth. Emerson got on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth inning. After the Comets tallied two runs in the top half of the ninth, Emerson scored four runs in the bottom half.
At the plate, seniors Sean Howard (Charlotte/Potterville) and Nate Rann (Laingsburg) along with sophomore Cody Goodell (Davison) had two hits a piece. Howard and Rann each collected two RBI. Senior Elliot Wilcox (Mattawan) pitched the first six innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. He struck out nine and walked one batter.
Against Wesley, Olivet had a 6-2 lead thru six innings. In the top half of the seventh, Wesley scored six runs. The Comets answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score at 8-8. Wesley grabbed the lead back with a run in its half of the eighth frame. Olivet responded by scoring six runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning. The inning was highlighted by a pinch hit double by Wilcox with the bases loaded.
Senior Chris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator) was three-for-five with two runs scored and two RBI. Goodell, Rann and seniors Nick McIntosh (Petoskey) and Derek Ott (Kawkawlin) each had two hits. Goodell and Rann scored three runs a piece. Junior Matt Emery (Glenco, Ontario/Regina) started on the mound but did not factor in the decision. Ott moved from his outfield position and pitched two innings in relief to earn the victory. Sophomore Steven Oginsky (New Lothrop) struck out the side in the ninth inning.
The Comets are back in action tomorrow when they play Eastern Mennonite (Va.) University at 1 p.m., followed by a game against Wesley.
