The Broncos took a 4-0 lead when they scored four unearned runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Olivet cut its deficit in half with a pair of runs in the third inning. Freshman Matt Smoker (Bronson) led off the inning with a single up the middle. He advanced to second when senior Chris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator) drew a four-pitch walk. Both runners moved up a base on a balk by the WMU pitcher. A groundout by sophomore Rob Swanson (Marshall) brought in Smoker, followed by a single by senior Nick McIntosh (Petoskey) to score Shelhart.
WMU added two more runs, both unearned, in the fifth inning. The Broncos closed the scoring with a five-run seventh and a two-run eighth.
At the plate, the Comets had four hits, including two by McIntosh. His hits were a single and a double. On the mound, senior Brad Dragicevich (Kalamazoo/Central) was charged with the loss, pitching four innings and allowing four unearned runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out three. Five relievers, Justin Creager (Grandville), Ed O'Brien (Stockbridge), Matt Emery (Glenco, Ontario/Regina), Elliott Wilcox (Mattawan) and Steven Oginsky (New Lothrop), combined to give up nine runs on nine hits. O'Brien, Oginsky and Wilcox each tossed an inning. Creager pitched two-thirds of an inning, and Emery threw one-third of an inning.
