The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Adrian College today in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader at Riverside Park in Adrian. The Bulldogs (14-8, 10-2 MIAA) won by scores of 1-0 and 8-2.
The first game was a pitcher's duel with Adrian scoring the only run in the fifth inning. Lance Kettinger reached base on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a double by Anthony Carr. The Comets (7-14, 4-8) were unable to get a runner past second base.
At the plate, Olivet out-hit the Bulldogs, 7-5. Senior Drew Benoit (Climax/Climax-Scotts) led the way with two hits in four plate appearances. Five others each had a hit, all singles. On the mound, junior Brad Dragicevich (Kalamazoo/Central) suffered the loss, pitching six innings and striking out two.
In the nightcap, Adrian batted around and scored six runs in the second inning. The Comets got two runs back in the third inning. Sophomore Michael Katlin (Howell) and junior Derek Ott (Kawkawlin/Bay City Western) reached on back-to-back walks. Benoit singled to load the bases. Senior Stan Cieslak (Troy/Avondale) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Katlin and move Ott to third base. Junior Nick McIntosh (Petoskey) ripped a single to plate Ott. The Bulldogs answered those runs with single tallies in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Five different Olivet players each recorded a hit. The lone extra base hit was a double in the sixth frame by senior Jonathon Van Son (Macomb/H.W. Notre Dame). Van Son also started on the mound and was tagged with the loss. He pitched three innings, yielding six hits and six runs. Junior Elliot Wilcox (Mattawan) came out of the bullpen and tossed three innings, allowing five hits.
The Comets will begin another MIAA four-game series Thursday, April 13, at Alma College. First pitch of the doubleheader from Klenk Park is slated for 2 p.m.
