Baseball team begins MIAA play with two losses to Kalamazoo, 6-1 and 8-0
The Olivet College baseball team began Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with two losses to Kalamazoo College this afternoon in Kalamazoo. The Comets (3-8, 0-2 MIAA) lost the first game, 6-1, and were shutout in game two, 8-0.

The Olivet College baseball team began Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with two losses to Kalamazoo College this afternoon in Kalamazoo. The Comets (3-8, 0-2 MIAA) lost the first game, 6-1, and were shutout in game two, 8-0. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Olivet beginning at 1 p.m.
In game one, Olivet scored its run in the first inning. With two outs, junior Chris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator) reached base on a single. He stole second base and scored a single by junior Nick McIntosh (Petoskey). The Hornets (10-2, 2-0 MIAA) tied the game with an unearned run in second inning. Kalamazoo sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs, four unearned, in the sixth.
At the plate, McIntosh had two of the Comets' five hits. On the mound, sophomore Adam Bassett (Bellevue) started and pitched five and one-third innings. He gave up five hits and six runs (one earned), while striking out five and walking two batters. Sophomore Ed O'Brien (Stockbridge) allowed two hits and got the final two outs of the game.
In the nightcap, the Hornets broke the game open with a six-run third inning and closed their scoring two runs in the fourth. Olivet had its best chance to score in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, leaving two runners on base each inning.
The Comets managed four base hits. McIntosh, freshman Cody Goodell (Davison), senior Eddie Jones (Warren/St. Clement) and junior Derek Ott (Kawkawlin/Bay City Western) had a single a piece. Freshman Brian Rogers (Coloma) pitched the first two and one-third innings, allowing one hit and five walks. Of the five walks, four came around to score. In relief, freshman Mark Sherrod (Jackson) tossed three and two-thirds innings, giving up five hits. Each pitcher surrendered four runs.
Following tomorrow's twinbill, the Comets' next MIAA series will be against Albion College. The doubleheader at Olivet is Thursday, March 30, and the doubleheader at Albion is Saturday, April 1. Both doubleheaders will get under way at 1 p.m.
