Baseball team defeats Kalamazoo, 25-1
The baseball team defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Kalamazoo College, 25-1, today in Kalamazoo. In the game, the Fighting Comets tallied 17 hits and took advantage of 13 walks and 11 wild pitches issued by the Hornet pitchers.

Olivet (18-13, 7-8 MIAA) scored three runs in the first inning. The first two runs came on a two-run double by sophomore Nick McIntosh (Petoskey). He then scored on a James Melvin (Redford-Thurston) double. The Comets had only one hit but pushed across four runs in the second inning.
In the third inning, sophomore Chris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator) hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season. Olivet then sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the fifth inning. The Comets tallied four runs in the sixth and seventh innings as the game after seven because of the 10-run mercy rule.
For the game, sophomore Derek Ott (Kawkawlin/Bay City Western) was three-for-four with three runs scored and two RBIs. Melvin along with Drew Benoit (Climax-Scotts) and Michael Katlin (Howell) collected two hits apiece. Eddie Jones (Warren/St. Clement) and Darren Smith (Olivet/Bellevue) each drove in three runs.
On the mound, junior Jonathon VanSon (Macomb/Notre Dame, H.W.) earned the win. He started and pitched the first three innings, allowing one base hit. Sophomore Brian Schaeffer (Mason) pitched two scoreless innings. Junior Blake Dunseth (Olivet/Coldwater) and senior Ben Thomas (Kalamazoo/Comstock) also pitched in relief.
The Comets will be back in action Thursday-Friday when they travel to Albion College for a MIAA three-game series. The teams will play a single nine-inning game Thursday at 4 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
