The baseball team fell to Calvin College, 11-2, today in the opening game of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) three-game series in Grand Rapids. The teams will play two seven-inning games tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m.
The Knights (8-12, 7-3 MIAA) scored a run in the first and second innings, five runs in the fifth and one run in the seventh to take an 8-0 lead. Calvin pitcher Jim Deters had a perfect game through seven innings. Sophomore Nick McIntosh (Petoskey) broke up the perfect game with a single to lead off the eighth inning.
McIntosh moved to third on a single by junior James Melvin (Redford Thurston). When Melvin stole second base, the Knight second baseman misplayed the ball, allowing McIntosh to score from third. Junior Chip Paddock (Galesburg Augusta) plated Melvin with the Fighting Comets' (15-11, 4-6 MIAA) second run.
Sophomore Evan Williams (Detroit/Notre Dame H.W.) suffered the loss on the mound. He pitched the first four and one-third innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out four batters.
Deters tossed a complete game, four-hitter. He struck out 20 Olivet batters and did not walk anyone.
Following tomorrow's games, the Comets will be until Friday-Saturday, April 22-23, when they travel to play a three-game series at Kalamazoo College.
