Three wrestlers, three golfers garner CSC Academic All-District® At-Large honors
OLIVET, Mich. – Three members of The University of Olivet wrestling team, and three members of the men's and women's golf teams have been chosen to the 2023-24 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District® At-Large Teams. The wrestling honorees are Ramiro Guerrero, Tyler Herrema and Mitchell Reynolds. The golfers are Rylee Honsowitz and Ella LaMothe from the women's team, and Connor Jewell from the men's team.
To be selected to the Academic All-District® team, the student-athlete must have a 3.50 or higher cumulative grade point average. He/she must also meet a certain athletic requirement for his/her sport. For wrestling, the student-athlete must have been in the lineup for a minimum of 70 percent of the matches which were team scoring events. For golf, the student-athlete must have competed in 70 percent of the team's total varsity events that were team scoring events.
Guerrero, a rising senior and psychology major, competed at 157 pounds and ended the 2023-24 season with a 22-11 record. More than half of his wins picked-up bonus points (five pins, five technical falls and three major decisions). He starts his senior season with a 54-41 career record.
Herrema, a rising senior and insurance and risk management major, wrestled at 149 pounds and posted a 25-9 record for the Comets. Of his 25 wins, 16 earned bonus points with five pins, seven technical falls and four major decisions. For his efforts, Herrema earned All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) honors. He enters his senior season with a 61-28 career record.
Reynolds, a recent graduate with a degree in insurance and risk management, finished his senior season with a 20-15 record at 174 pounds. Of his 35 matches, he had four pins and six technical falls, and of his 15 losses, Reynolds was never pinned and only lost once by technical fall. He wrapped-up his collegiate career with 37 wins.
Honsowitz, a rising senior and insurance and risk management major, played in 16 rounds and averaged a team-low 85.8 strokes. Her low round was an 80 to win medalist honors at the Cleary University Cougar Fall Classic on October 16, 2023, at the Oak Pointe Country Club in Brighton. Entering the start of her senior season, she has an 88.2 career stroke average.
LaMothe, a rising junior and environmental science major, posted an 87.4 stroke average over 17 rounds. Her low score was an 82 in the second round of the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Classic. In addition, LaMothe had an 83 at the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scot Spring Invitational to earn medalist honors. She has played in 38 career rounds for the Comets and is averaging 88.8 strokes.
Jewell, a rising senior and insurance and risk management major, had an 81.9 stroke average in 14 rounds. His best score was a 73 at the Heidelberg (Ohio) University Snowball's Chance Invitational on March 17, 2024, at the Mohawk Golf & Country Club in Tiffin, Ohio. The round placed him first of 47 golfers in the event. Jewell has averaged 85.1 strokes in 50 career rounds.
Of the six, Herrema advances to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes at-large honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced on Wednesday, July 17. The Division III CSC Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2023-24 Division III Academic All-America® programs.
